Hello from Missouri

Postby Alexander_Monday » Wed Jan 06, 2010 8:09 pm

Just wanted to introduce myself and my project.

I have been around drag racing and fast street cars since the 70's
I am a master electrician with a background in electronics and programming way back when you had to build your computer
I am a packrat (Still have my Altair 8080 I built in '76 if that says enough)
I can be long winded as this post will prove
I am married to an otherwise wonderful wife that unfortunately is insanely jealous of my time so car projects get done slowly
Had lots of V8 hot rods, but that is not what this board is about

VW's:

1) Still have the first VW I built which is (according to the DOT) an 88 specially constructed vehicle (dun bug)
Getting that builder title was a hoot here in MO, but I didn't want any legal problems with it
It is currently looking sad in the back yard without an engine

2) 71 bug that was a basket case when I hauled it home
Frame off cleaning welding etc.etc.
Full cage tied into front beam & rear frame horns
Fiber one piece front end
Fiber 3" wider than stock rear fenders
Removable apron & side engine compartment tin
Narrowed beam, cant remember the amount I cut it to exactly, but around 6"
Dropped front spindles
Disc breaks all the way around (The type 3 kind, not the super expensive ones)
Berg mid tranny mount
Adjustable rear spring plates
26MM ? sway away torsions ( came out of my sand rail & I cant remember the exact size )

Latest engine is 2110 (82X90.5)
Berg modified pistons with double snap rings in thick wall cylinders
Wedgemated lightend flywheel by DPR with unknown 82MM crank I bought in the 80's second hand (Jose has never seen one like it, so who knows)
Sleeved lifter bores by Brothers
Full flow with Oberg
FK87 (now changed to a custom FK10/FK87 on 116 centers in anticipation of boost)
CB Street Eliminator heads currently with CB manifolds & 44 IDF's
MegaJolt / EDIS currently for ignition with a custom machined Berg Equalizer pulley and Ford VR sensor
Berg 1 5/8 header
Moroso spiral racing muffler
Moroso Accusump
Dial in Cams adjustable roller rocker arms (One finally decided to give it up after 20 years or so, so Pauter 1.5's will go on now)
Custom clutch & disc by a local shop (Clutch Axle & Transmission Inc.)

The plan:

Autorotor 3150 twin screw (A little large, but I got a great deal on it in primo condition)
Custom air to water intercooler
Infinity Q45 throttle body (Yes it is huge, but I am making a custom progressive linkage to try to tame the pedal off idle)
Infinity Q45 MAF
GM servo air bypass in custom made body
ProCharger bypass valve
Greedy BOV to be used as a pop off relief in case of back fire
Custom dual cooling shrouds with OG welded fans
Custom pulleys
Doubleday racing fuel injector holders
65# FAST injectors (Probably too small with E85, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it)
MagnaFuel referenced regulator
I have a Tahoe FF in tank pump, but looking for a deal on an external E85 compatible pump
Large Setrab oil cooler because I cannot run the stock cooler
Retain MegaJolt to start off because it is in know working condition
MSII for fuel to start off, then ignition once fuel is dialed in

Much more small stuff has been purchased, and much more small stuff to go.
I am into this EFI/Blower rabbit hole to the tune of about $2800 USD now with a $3200 initial budget, so I am going to blow the budget for sure.

Initial mock up on an old case / heads:

I am further along now with the blower mounts, intake adapter, and fan shrouds made, but don't have pics yet with those pieces.

Next step is the pulley set up.
I have a 6 rib set up fabbed, but I am thinking of going to a Gilmer drive to help alleviate side forces on the crank snout.
I am checking with Dyers currently to see if they have some stuff I can adapt that won't break the bank.

Sorry to bore you with all this, so I will stop for now.

Best wishes.

;)

wow nice. those fans look similar to the dual squirrel cage fans like dragsters use. when you begin the MS build, start posting in the aircooled build section, this looks awesome!
